I have gained a personal interest in water quality and preserving it when the neighborhood my mother lives in announced that arsenic had been found in the water supply. My personal research has led me here and now I’m proud to share it with you.

Brita 10-Cup Everyday Pitcher

The ‘Just Start Somewhere’ Pick for Budget-Conscious Renters

It’s not the most powerful on the list, but it’s the most affordable entry point, has the longest filter lifespan of any pitcher here, and no other filter tested matched this baseline contaminant-removal level at such an affordable price. Its an upgrade from bottled water at an affordable price. It’s a great filter I’ve used extensively in the past, but I’ve since moved on to others on the list.

Contaminant Removal
Chlorine, lead, some heavy metals — NSF 42 & 53 certified

Setup & Portability
Pitcher — zero setup, lightest on the list

Filter Lifespan / Cost Per Gallon
120 gallons per filter / under $0.13 per gallon — a two-pack for ~$30 covers an entire year

PUR Plus Faucet Mount Filter

The Instant-On Pick for Small Kitchens and Impatient Renters

No waiting for a pitcher to fill. No counter space lost. Attaches in under a minute. The vertical design fits most faucets with a simple one-click installation that makes setup and filter changes easy. It’s the cheapest cost-per-gallon on the list. Now before you buy just make sure it fits your faucet. This is one of the best sellers and I chose this variation because it seems to work better than others.

Contaminant Removal
Reduces lead and PFAS to near-undetectable levels, removes chlorine, and performs well on heavy metals including barium, copper, zinc, and iron

Setup & Portability
Faucet-mount, one-click install, no tools

Filter Lifespan / CPG
3 months / ~$0.05/gallon — estimated annual cost of just $41 at 40 gallons per month

ZeroWater 10-Cup Pitcher with TDS Meter

For the Renter Who Needs to See It to Believe It

The included TDS meter is the secret weapon — it lets skeptics test before and after and see the difference. ZeroWater stands apart with its 5-stage ion exchange filtration system that removes nearly all total dissolved solids — something other pitcher brands don’t even attempt. Higher ongoing filter cost is the tradeoff, which is worth it to many. But you’ll be the judge of that

Contaminant Removal
Reduces 100% fluoride, uranium, strontium, nitrate, molybdenum, sulfate, barium, copper, and lead — 5-stage ion exchange

Setup & Portability
Another Pitcher — zero setup, includes TDS meter

Filter Lifespan / CPG
20–40 gallons depending on water quality / ~$0.27/gallon

PUR Plus 30-Cup Dispenser

Near-Reverse Osmosis Performance at a Fraction of the Price

It delivers filtration performance nearly on par with under-sink reverse osmosis systems without requiring a complicated install. For those on a tighter budget or who want solid health protection without the undercounter footprint, this is the move.

Contaminant Removal
Removes 100% of lead, arsenic, and uranium, plus over 96% of PFNA (a PFAS compound) — NSF certified for lead, microplastics, chlorine, and 20+ chemical impurities

Setup & Portability
Dispenser — zero setup, fits any fridge

Filter Lifespan / CPG
3 months / ~$0.09/gallon

AquaTru Carafe

“The Gold Standard for People Who Are Serious About Their Water”

The AquaTru Carafe. That’s a fancy word for a fancy filter. It has French origins and just means pitcher. It’s high end and that’s why it received the highest overall weighted score of all apartment filters tested: 9.57. It is the ONLY system reviewed that’s certified for the reduction of all the contaminants the manufacturer claims it can reduce. It does this through a reverse Osmosis filter option. The glass carafe also eliminates microplastic leaching risk that plastic storage tanks create.

This is number one for anyone who has actually read a water quality report and lost sleep over it. I debated if it should be #1 due to the price jump, but it’s well worth it. Now that I’ve upgraded to it, I will never go back!

Contaminant Removal
Lead, PFAS, fluoride, arsenic, chlorine, microplastics, heavy metals — 82 contaminants total, fully NSF/ANSI certified across standards 42, 53, 58, and 401

Setup & Portability
Countertop, plug-in only, zero plumbing, moves with you

Filter Lifespan / Cost Per Gallon
Filters last 6 months to 2 years, ~$0.25/gallon
